Costumes and Sparkles—Two of My Favorite Things
Last week, a high school friend contacted me to ask me if I wanted to attend Night Two of the Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert in New Orleans. I’m not a Swiftie, and I know very few of her songs, but the hype around this tour drew me in, and I jumped at the chance. This was the first year that I had not been living in New Orleans for my annual Witchy Luncheon with friends, so it worked out that I could attend two fun events in one trip.
Driving into the city, I first spotted the huge friendship bracelet draped across the Superdome. This set the stage for what turned out to be an incredible weekend! The entire city was decked out in sparkles, glitter, and, of course, friendship bracelets. We arrived at Tableau, a French Quarter restaurant, for the Witchy Luncheon on Friday, and it was definitely not the Witchy Luncheons of years past. Although our coven, I mean table, was dressed in black, around the room were dozens of Swiftie witches wearing pink and sparkles and singing Taylor songs. Sure, there were Halloween decorations, but they were mixed with a shiny pink fringed photo backdrop, mirror ball balloons, and even a traveling glitter bar!
When I jump into something, I jump all the way in, so I spent much of Friday afternoon and Saturday making friendship bracelets to trade with Swifties (and faux Swifties like me). I don’t ever turn down an excuse to wear sparkles, so I put on lavender sparkles (which I now know is Taylor’s favorite color) and headed to the Superdome.
It is very hard to describe the difference between a Taylor Swift concert and one of the many others that I have attended. Although I was in the midst of 65,000 strangers, most of which were much younger than me, I felt like I was hanging out with my best girlfriends. There was a palpable joy throughout the Superdome and the entire city! The concert itself? Incredible! There were tears and smiles, and I could see that Taylor was taking in every minute of the adoration that the crowd felt for her. The special effects were amazing and flawless, and the crowd danced and sang to every song. It was a little scary when the stands began shaking, but that was quickly forgotten as we were swept up in the moment.
There are a few dates left on Taylor’s Eras Tour, and even though tickets are expensive (no, outrageous), I urge you to consider attending if you can. It’s incredible how much unadulterate glee was running through the streets of New Orleans last weekend. The Swifite magic truly transformed the city. Seeing so many people trading friendship bracelets, dancing in the streets, and just having fun brings out the girlhood in all of us, no matter our age, and who doesn’t want to be a girl again?
Signed,
Kim
